Lorsch Abbey and the famous Königshalle (King’s Hall)

The function of the Königshalle or exactly when it was built is still unknown. Maybe it was in honour of Carl the Great as a kind of triumphal arch on the occasion of his visit to Lorsch. The Königshalle is celebrated as an architectural „jewel of the carolingian Renaissance“, with its arcades and pillars it is one of the oldest and best preserved historical builidings of post-roman times in Germany – a builiding of european ranking. On the upper floor, remnants of carolingian murals and gothic frescoes can be seen.

Königshalle
In 1991 the Königshalle was added to the list of UNESCO World heritage sites.
